In 1995, the New York Islanders replaced their classic circular logo with what would become one of the most controversial rebrands in NHL history: the Fisherman logo.

The redesign was part of a broader attempt to modernize the franchise during a period of instability, both on and off the ice. Ownership wanted a stronger connection to Long Island’s maritime identity and a more aggressive, contemporary visual language, in line with mid-1990s sports branding trends.

The reaction was immediate and overwhelmingly negative.

Fans rejected the logo almost instantly. Season ticket holders protested, merchandise sales underperformed, and the design became a frequent subject of ridicule in media and around the league. What was intended as a symbol of toughness and regional pride was instead seen as a break from tradition at a time when the franchise could least afford it.

Despite this, the Fisherman logo was worn on the ice for two seasons (1995–96 and 1996–97), making it a brief but unforgettable chapter in Islanders history.

Players associated with the era

The Fisherman logo era coincided with a turbulent roster period, but several notable players wore the mark:

  • Zigmund Pálffy, one of the most skilled players of his generation, produced elite offensive seasons while wearing the Fisherman jersey.

  • Kirk Muller and Bryan Smolinski were among the veterans tasked with stabilizing the lineup during the rebrand.

  • Tommy Salo, later a Swedish national team mainstay, also appeared during this period.

While the logo did not survive, performances by players like Pálffy ensured the era is remembered for more than just its visuals.

Legacy

By 1997, the Islanders abandoned the Fisherman logo and returned to a version of their traditional crest. Over time, what was once widely disliked has become a cult symbol — remembered not for success, but for how strongly it challenged the idea of what an NHL logo should be.

Today, the Fisherman logo represents a rare moment when branding, fan culture, and hockey identity collided — and lost.
