The Montreal Canadiens were founded in 1909, making them the oldest continuously operating professional hockey team in the world. The club is commonly referred to as “Les Canadiens” or “The Habs”, a nickname derived from Les Habitants, early French settlers in Quebec. Montreal has won the Stanley Cup more times than any other team, with championships spanning multiple eras of the league. The Canadiens were a central part of the Original Six era, during which the NHL consisted of only six teams from 1942 to 1967. For decades, the team served as a cultural symbol for French-speaking Canada, with hockey functioning as both sport and identity in Montreal.
